We are proponents of keeping natural stone surfaces natural. I like to simplify the understanding around the word "sealer" for better understanding. Let's broaden this category into two buckets. Penetrating sealers and topical coating sealers.
- A penetrating sealer absorbs microscopic silicone (or similar) particles into the porous surface creating a moisture barrier. It can and will repel water and buy you a little time if something acidic spills on the floor. It will also reduce the rate of grout line soiling. Your surface will look natural and you cannot see if/when the sealer begins to wear. It is completely invisible. This does not make your floor bullet proof and it can still scratch and etch or stain. It is however very helpful when it comes to marble maintenance. Knowledge and proper care are your best resources.
- The next "bucket" is topical sealers. This is a sacrificial finish that does change the look of your surface. Think of a hospital VCT floor that looks shiny. This is a wax buffed to a high sheen. It's a coating that requires a different level of maintenance and is rarely a good fit for natural stone. Other coatings include acrylic finishes, epoxy, urethane and many more.
