A simplified overview of marble restoration & professional services

About Marble restoration:

HOW IT WORKS

  • No one size fits all but the basic building blocks remain the same. To use the word "Restoration" refers to utilizing abrasive sanding pads designed specifically for marble. Just like polishing a gem or sanding wood smooth, we must start at a lower grit and in sequence work up to the desired finish level. This will dictate sheen. Honed or satin surfaces stop at a lower grit while polished surfaces stop at a higher grit.
  • All surfaces will generally be finished with some type of specialty powder. We utilize honing powders of different grits or polishing powders to maximize sheen.
  • Every job requires a great deal of attention and starts by protecting your surrounding surfaces with plastic and floor mats.
  • Every job includes deep cleaning the grout lines to improve uniformity. Surface soiling can always be removed whereas true deep penetrated staining cannot.
  • Every job we seal with a fully penetrating sealant. This keeps your natural surface looking natural while providing some added protection. This is NOT bullet-proof but helps in the life and maintenance of your surfaces.
  • Our goal is to respect your property, minimize any change of damage and offer complete transparency to what can and/or cannot be done to achieve your goals.
  • It is important to us, no matter how small or large the job is, to have an expert meet with you and review the surface. This allows us to identify any potential issues and thoroughly discuss recommended process or processes to meet your goals.

About Marble Advanced Maintenance:

HOW IT WORKS

  • A more economical approach can still yield great results. Sometimes your floor may not need a full restoration or you are just looking to overall improve the appearance. This can be done utilizing a variety of different powders specifically designed for deep cleaning and creating better uniformity throughout. All steps follow the above except the use of abrasive diamond pads.

Lets talk about the word "sealers":

HOW IT WORKS

We are proponents of keeping natural stone surfaces natural. I like to simplify the understanding around the word "sealer" for better understanding. Let's broaden this category into two buckets. Penetrating sealers and topical coatings.

  • A penetrating sealer absorbs microscopic silicone (or similar) particles into the porous surface creating a moisture barrier. It can and will repel water and buy you a little time if something acidic spills on the floor. It will also reduce the rate of grout line soiling. Your surface will look natural and you cannot see if/when the sealer begins to wear. It is completely invisible. This does not make your floor bullet proof and it can still scratch and etch or stain. It is however very helpful to reduce these possibilities. Knowledge and proper maintenance are your best resources.
  • The next "bucket" is topical sealers. This is a sacrificial finish that does change the look of your surface. Think of a hospital VCT floor that looks shiny. This is a wax buffed to a high sheen. It's a coating that requires a different level of maintenance and is rarely a good fit for natural stone. Other coatings include acrylic finishes, epoxy, urethane and many more.
